Words can not express the gratitude I have for my fellow Cov businesses!
Kandi from Agave & Rye made me so happy! She delivered to me a sign that had been hanging on the back of their building for at least 80 years! Since it was in an alley obscured by a building that was recently torn down, I had no idea it was there.
The sign was for my great uncle’s Optometry office that was over a door in an alley behind his office at 631 Madison. It appears that it was a metal sign for some type of bottles that he had spray painted black. Then with stencils, he put his name and address on the sign. I believe that metal was probably scarce during war time.
The current location of Metzger Eye Care is just a few steps away from the location he used in the back of a jewelry store that was facing Madison. The last photo shows the Papi Jaco Hot Dog Restaurant as the site of EL Metzger’s office. Our building is the red, white and blue building on the left of the photo facing 7th.
